How Herbal Tea Helps with Hypothyroidism

by andMe Bioactive Beverage 09 Nov 2022

Herbal tea is a beverage made from the leaves, flowers, stems, roots and seeds of plants for centuries. Drinking herbal teas can help with hypothyroidism in many ways. Herbal teas are made from the leaves, flowers and stems of plants. Some herbs have been used for hundreds of years as medicines. Other herbs have been used for millennia as food or as decorations. Regardless of age, all herbal teas are rich in antioxidants and other nutrients that support health.

Herbal tea is made using hot water, which helps the ingredients inside the leaf or flower to release their healing properties into your body. Some people use herbal tea to treat hypothyroidism symptoms such as fatigue and weight gain. Others use it to improve their health by increasing energy levels and helping them feel better.

What teas help with hypothyroidism?

When your thyroid gland is functioning properly, it makes enough hormones for you to function normally. However, your thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones if you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's disease. Hypothyroidism can cause fatigue, poor concentration, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss and brittle nails. Here are some herbal teas that will help ease hypothyroidism symptoms:

1) Chamomile (Matricaria recutita):

This herb has been used for centuries to help with skin conditions. It has also been found to help support healthy thyroid function. In one study, patients who were supplemented with chamomile daily saw improvements in their serum TSH and T4 levels after six weeks. Over the course of three months, they also saw improvements in their lipid profile (LDL cholesterol level and triglycerides).

How to make:

Ingredients:

  • -A handful of fresh chamomile flowers
  • -8 ounces boiling water
  • -2 apple mint leaves

Process:

  • -Remove the stem and wash with warm water.
  • -Wrap the petals in a wet paper towel and store it in an air-tight container; you can store these flowers in the refrigerator for 48 hours.
  • -Boil water and pour the flower petals into an infuser.
  • -Let the water soak the flavours for at least 5 minutes.
  • -Remove the petals and put the mint leaves; let it sit for 2 minutes.
  • -Strain and enjoy your fresh chamomile brew.

2) Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale):

Along with regulating TSH levels, Dandelion root has traditionally been used as a diuretic to treat kidney stones. In addition, it contains high amounts of potassium, which can benefit people with hypothyroidism. Dandelion root is also known for its ability to regulate blood sugar levels. This ingredient is believed to combat severe diseases like cancer and boost optimal well-being.

How to make:

  • -1 cup water
  • -2 tsp dried dandelion root
  • -1 1/2 tsp of honey

Process:

  • -Boil the water in a saucepan.
  • -Add the root; you can use powder, but using the raw root is advisable.
  • -Let it steep for 3 minutes.
  • -Turn off the heat and let it stop for 30 minutes.
  • -Restrain the mixture in a cup.
  • -Mix honey before consuming.

3) Green Tea:

Green tea is the most popular type of herbal tea, and it contains flavonoids that have antioxidant properties. Oxidative stress is a major player in the progression of hypothyroidism, as it causes damage to tissues and leads to cell death. Green tea has antioxidants called catechins that work to reduce oxidative stress caused by this process.

How to make:

  • -Boil the water and allow it to cool for 2-3 minutes.
  • -Pour in the cup and dip the teabag.
  • -Allow 2 minutes to mix the delicious aroma; if you want a stronger brew, you can leave it for 5-6 minutes.

4) Oolong Tea:

Oolong tea also contains antioxidants called catechins but differs from green tea in that it is slightly oxidized during processing for longer shelf life. This means it has fewer catechins than green tea and does not offer the same benefits for hypothyroidism treatment. However, oolong teas still contain some antioxidants that can support thyroid health.

Ingredients:

  • -6 ounces water
  • -1-2 tsp tea leaves

Process:

  • -Let the water heat upto 200°F
  • -Steep the tea for at least 5 minutes
  • -Strain and enjoy.

5) Black Tea:

Black teas do not contain any antioxidants; instead, they are made by fermenting leaves with bacteria which create compounds called polyphenols (also found in wine). These compounds have been shown to have therapeutic effects on the body, including supporting healthy immune function and preventing weight gain.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
