Menstrual Disorder, Types and Treatments

Menstrual disorders refer to abnormal changes in a woman's menstrual cycle, such as irregular periods, heavy or light bleeding, or absent periods. Menstrual disorders can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, certain medications, physical or emotional stress, and underlying health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or uterine fibroids. 

What are the different types of menstrual disorders? 

  1. Dysmenorrhea: 

Dysmenorrhea is the most common menstrual disorder and is characterized by painful cramps or aches in the pelvic region before or during menstruation. It can be severe and debilitating, but in most cases, it goes away after a few days. All types of dysmenorrhea, including menstrual migraine and intermenstrual bleeding, are associated with pain in the lower abdomen. The cause of dysmenorrhea is unknown, but it may be linked to irritable bowel syndrome and chronic stress. Many women with dysmenorrhea also experience bloating and diarrhea during their menses. 

Treatment: Yoga

      2.Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): 

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of symptoms that occur during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle from about one week before ovulation until about two weeks after ovulation. These symptoms include breast tenderness, fatigue, headache, irritability and depression. They usually begin two to three days before your period begins and last for one week after your period ends. The severity of PMS varies from woman to woman; some women experience mild symptoms only, while others have more severe symptoms such as acne or depression. 

Treatment: Aromatherapy

Is aromatherapy effective for PMS? 

Aromatherapy is one of the natural ways to reduce stress and fatigue. It contains essential oils, which provide a calming effect.  

What are the essential oils you can use: 

  • Lavender 
  • Clary sage 
  • Chamomile 
  • Rose 

      2. Menorrhagia: 

Heavy menstrual bleeding or menorrhagia can occur at any time in your menstrual cycle, but it's more common during the first three days of your period when you have higher levels of estrogen and progesterone than normal. Menorrhagia can cause exhaustion from not being able to rest or sleep well due to pain from heavy bleeding. 

Treatment: Iron-enriched food

Why is Iron important in this condition? 

Chronic iron deficiency can cause heavy bleeding. Try to include iron-enriched food if you are suffering from Menorrhagia. 

What are the Iron-enriched food options? 

  • Spinach 
  • Beetroot 
  • Legumes 
  • Oats 
  • Tofu 

 

      3. PCOS: (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) 

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It is one of the most common causes of female infertility and is characterized by multiple cysts on the ovaries, irregular menstrual periods, and high levels of certain hormones. The exact cause of PCOS is unknown but can be stimulated by factors like genetic history, lifestyle choices, and stress. Symptoms of PCOS may include irregular or absent periods, weight gain, acne, excess hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, and thighs, thinning of the scalp hair, and fertility problems. 

Treatment: Herbal tea

Can I drink tea with PCOS? 

Regular milk tea might create some trouble with PCOS, but herbal teas are one of the most effective home remedies for menstrual disorder

  • Cinnamon tea

    4. Metrorrhagia: 

Metrorrhagia is a common menstrual disorder that occurs when there is a constant fluctuation in the blood flow. This can be caused by an absence of the menstrual cycle, an early or late menstrual cycle, or abnormal bleeding associated with the menstrual cycle. 

Treatment: Tranexamic acid

    5. Amenorrhea: 

Amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual periods in a woman of reproductive age. There are two types of amenorrhea: primary amenorrhea, which refers to the absence of periods in a woman who has never had a period. Another condition is secondary amenorrhea, which means you were having a regular period cycle, but due to some condition (pregnancy), it suddenly stopped, or you have noticed some changes in the cycle. Primary amenorrhea may be caused by hormonal imbalances, medications, physical or emotional stress, or underlying health conditions or uterine abnormalities. Secondary amenorrhea may be caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, or certain medications.  

Treatment: Apple Cider Vinegar

How does it help ease the condition? 

This natural elixir balances the hormone level and eases the period cycle 

How to consume it? 

You can mix 1 tsp with normal water or add it with your regular detox water. 

    7. Oligomenorrhea: 

Oligomenorrhea means having fewer than three periods per year. Oligomenorrhoea can be caused by irregular menstrual cycles, taking certain medications that affect hormone levels or having a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). Oligomenorrhea may occur at any age but is most common in the woman's teens or early twenties. In addition, Oligomenorrhea can be associated with other menstrual disorders and stress. 

Treatment: Papaya 

Fresh papaya, cut into pieces, put on a wooden floor

How does it help ease the condition? 

This fruit contains carotene that stimulates estrogen levels and maintains the period cycle. 

How to consume it? 

For effective results, you can consume raw papaya two times a day.
