Mood swings - who is responsible?
[article] Ever felt extremely happy, extremely sad, extremely angry and extremely anxious in the same day, within a short span of time? Well.. we know the answer!
But do we know the reason of these mood swings? It is the hormones! Believe it or not, but hormonal balance plays a huge role in women’s health - be it physical or mental. Women’s bodies go through a hormonal rollercoaster every month. This roller coaster becomes even more severe during puberty, pregnancy and menopause.
Let’s understand the role of different hormones on women’s moods and health:
1. Estrogen
It is group of hormones that play a huge role in emotional wellbeing (and other important things). It regulates neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine that are functional in mood regulation.
➼ High levels of estrogen along with low levels of progesterone can cause fatigue, anxiety or depression, weight gain.
Estrogen increase the production of serotonin (the feel good chemical).
Fluctuating levels of estrogen can cause mood swings and irritability:
➼ Low levels of estrogen can insomnia, decreased sexual desire, headaches.
2. Cortisol
Also known as the ‘stress hormone’, this hormone is responsible for out flight or fight response. We live hectic lives and often feel a lot of societal pressure to look, live or be in a certain way.
All of this puts us under unending chromic stress and our adrenal glands keeps on releasing cortisol. This can increase our blood sugar, blood pressure and can also cause depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions.
3. Thyroid hormones (T3 & T4)
T3 and T4 are mood regulators that also influence the metabolic rate in the body. They are directly associated with our energy levels and emotions.
4. Progesterone
This hormone plays a significant role in reproductive shifts and is also associated with increased amygdala sensitivity (the part of the brain that is associated with the fight or flight panic response).
Studies linked women with higher than average progesterone to be more likely to suffer from anxiety than those with lower levels.
